The Department of Botany and Plant Pathology invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
The position is seated in the Botany and Plant Pathology unit in OSU's College of Agricultural Sciences. It is located on OSU campus but may involve work in the field (nearby and in Eastern OR), which requires driving to the field location.
Primary responsibility is supporting the research program of Dr. Halliday on grass and fungal diversity and abundance in Oregon grasslands (including grass seed production, turf, pasture, and natural areas). Secondary responsibility is supporting the research program of Dr. Liston on plant DNA diagnostics. The incumbent will conduct laboratory work (preparing materials, identifying grass specimens, recording disease symptoms and grass traits, culturing fungi from leaves, simple DNA extraction using a kit, DNA quantification, PCR , agarose gels, plant propagation and inoculation in greenhouse and growth chambers) and some field work (collecting grass samples). The position includes data management (data entry, data quality control, and data archiving) and supervision of undergraduate students. Field work will involve driving to diverse field sites, walking 100-meter transects, and collecting grass specimens.
Field work in Eastern Oregon will require overnight stays, often in campgrounds or other rustic settings.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):
Requires Bachelor's degree in discipline appropriate to the field in which research is being conducted.
Requirements :
B.Sc degree AND at least 6 months of experience in research lab and field work, with knowledge of data management.
Ability to follow directions and make independent decisions regarding lab and field research.
Commitment to safety, quality of work, and professionalism.
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity in a research setting.
This position will require driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
