The Village of Jackson, located in Washington County, WI, is seeking a FT Firefighter/Paramedic to join our team!

The general purpose of this position is to:

Perform a variety of technical, administrative, and supervisory work in inspecting buildings, facilities, and property for fire hazards and code compliance; providing community and departmental education; and responding to emergency incidents. FF/Paramedic are assigned by the Village to a 24-hour shifts (48/96) averaging 56 hours per week. FF paramedic may act as a MPO, truck officer on a relief basis. This classification is a FLSA non-exempt.

License/Certification Requirements:

The minimum qualifications for the Firefighter paramedic position include a valid Wisconsin drivers license, State of Wisconsin paramedic license, and Wisconsin certified Fire Fighter I. Within one year of hire, employees must also obtain NIMS 100, 200, and 700 training, certified Driver/Operator-pumper, and Certified Fire Inspector I certification paid for by the department.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Must possess thorough knowledge of modern fire suppression methods and emergency medical services (EMS) practices. Requires the ability to interpret and apply codes, regulations, and building plans with a high degree of accuracy. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with the ability to remain calm under pressure and make sound, timely decisions in high-stress situations. Candidates must demonstrate physical strength, stamina, and agility to perform physically demanding tasks in hazardous and unpredictable environments. Proficiency in operating computers and department-specific software for reporting, documentation, and communication is necessary. The role also requires effective teamwork, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Education and Prior Experience:

A firefighter Paramedic should possess a high school Diploma or equivalent. While a degree in Fire Protection or a related field is not required, it is considered beneficial. Candidates should demonstrate experience in both fire and EMS work. No firefighter experience is necessary but preferred to ensure a solid foundation in emergency operations and apparatus handling.

Specific Position Responsibilities:

Provides Emergency Medical Services:

Respond to emergency calls, assess patient conditions, and provide care at the Paramedic level in accordance with department protocols.
Maintain Wisconsin EMT-Paramedic license.
Communicate patient data effectively to medical professionals.
Complete required EMS documentation and ensure medical supplies are properly stocked and inventoried.

Fire suppression and rescue:

Respond to and assist in mitigating fires, accidents, hazardous material incidents, and rescue situations.
Operate hoses, ladders, saws, rescue tools, pumps, aerial ladders, and other fire apparatus.
Participate in specialized rescue operations including confined space, high angle, trench, and water rescues.

Fire Inspections and Code Enforcement:

Conduct inspections of buildings, special events, and hazardous material sites for fire safety compliance.
Assist in developing and reviewing fire exit plans and evacuation drills.
Maintain inspection records and provide technical interpretations of fire codes.
Work with community members and departments to ensure fire code compliance and safety standards.

Training and Leadership:

Mentoring part-time and paid-on-call personnel.
Assist in developing and delivering fire and EMS training programs.
Participate in planning and presenting ongoing training sessions.
Prepare and deliver oral and written reports as required.

Public Education and Outreach:

Support fire prevention efforts through community education programs.
Assist with public relations efforts and creation of safety-related media materials.
Promote fire safety awareness throughout the Village and towns.

Operational Duties:

Perform pre-shift and post-incident apparatus and equipment checks.
Conduct routine maintenance of tools, equipment, and fire station facilities.
Maintain readiness of PPE and department resources.
Ensure punctuality, predictable attendance, and participate in meetings and events.

Environmental Adaptability:

This position requires employees to maintain a high level of physical conditioning in accordance with NFPA 1582 standards, specifically those outlined in Section 5.1 of the 2022 edition. Firefighters must be capable of performing physically demanding tasks in extreme, unpredictable, and often hazardous environments. Duties may include operating in confined spaces, elevated areas, and adverse weather conditions during both day and night shifts. Tasks frequently involve climbing stairs or ladders while wearing heavy protective gear, advancing charged hose lines, dragging or lifting individuals weighing over 200 pounds, and working under stress without scheduled rest or hydration. Personnel must operate while wearing self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and fully encapsulating protective gear, which increases physical strain and impairs communication and visibility. Members must also function effectively as part of a team, sometimes for shifts exceeding 12 hours, while maintaining sufficient strength, mobility, dexterity, vision, and hearing to safely and effectively perform life-saving operations.

The environment includes offices, vehicles, and various outdoor settings and may expose employees to smoke, fumes, chemicals, airborne particles, noxious odors, toxic substances, and the risk of electrical shock or vibration. Firefighters occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, in high or precarious places, and with explosives. Noise levels vary from quiet to in office settings to extremely loud at emergency scenes. Employees must have the physical ability to lift and move objects 90 pounds independently and up to 200 pounds with assistance. Periodic physical and psychological evaluations may be required to ensure ongoing fitness for duty.
