SUMMARY:Provides support to lead teacher and assists students with individual physical, social, academic, and other needs as they learn life and job readiness skills.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: These statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.
1. Provide support to students with disabilities in the classroom, community-based educational settings, and other educational settings (e.g. playground, hallway, restroom, gymnasium, school vehicle, and other specified areas).
2. Provide assistance to teachers and related service personnel in implementing the IEP.
3. Provide assistance with personal care of students.
4. Supervise and ensure safety of students.
5. Provide necessary supports to enable students with physical, health, and/or behavioral issues or limitations to be able to access their educational program.
6. Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce skills initially introduced by the teacher.
7. Assist the teacher in implementing strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities.
8. Operate equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
9. Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips.
10. Assist with large group activities.
11. Participate in the planning of lessons and classroom activities.
12. Conduct educational classroom activities with small groups of special needs students.
13. Inform the teacher of special needs of individual students.
14. Transport students in a school vehicle to work sites in the community.
15. Provide assistance and supervision to students at work sites.
16. Assist in maintaining individual records for each student.
17. Assist students with daily living skills.
18. Appropriately interacts with partners to develop a program that is best for students
19. Transports and aides in the supervision of students as they go to their job site
20. Communicates with teacher regarding observations made while on job site.   
21. Assist students with transition activities
22. Assists with special projects. 
23. All other duties as assigned by the administrator.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:None   

QUALIFICATION: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
1. High school diploma or GED.
2. Generally receive paraprofessional training within first year of employment.
3. CPR and First Aid certification.
4. 6 hours of continuing education per year to maintain paraprofessional certification from the State of Oklahoma.
5. Paraprofessional/Assistant Training (provided by school nurses).

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:Basic knowledge of disabilities.  Ability to follow all district policies and procedures.  Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done.  Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators.  Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player.  Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees.  Ability to listen effectively.   

LANGUAGE SKILLS:Ability to read and interpret general written instructions in English language.  Ability to effectively communicate with supervisor, school personnel, and co-workers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:Ability to perform basic math functions such as addition and subtraction.

REASONING ABILITY:Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Will require lifting of student for proper positioning to prevent deformity and enhance comfort and stability, also transferring of student to toilet, floor wedge, bolster ball and other therapeutic equipment.  While performing the duties of this job, you must be able to sit in classroom chairs at a desk for up to an hour at a time.  Frequently walk the hallways the length of the school.

Work environment can at times be very stressful but is usually calm.  There can be many interruptions in routine due to student behavior or making accommodations. Must have own transportation to sites.
