Job Description

The Marine Electronics Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic equipment and systems on various marine vessels, ensuring safe and effective operation of navigation, communication, and other vital systems. This role requires a strong technical background, problem-solving abilities, and a thorough understanding of marine-specific electrical and electronic system technologies. Key Responsibilities: 1. Installation & Setup:

  • Install and configure marine electronic systems, including radar, GPS, sonar, depth sounders, VHF radios, autopilots, and other navigation aids.
  • Set up and calibrate communication systems such as satellite communications, AIS, and weather monitoring systems.
2. Maintenance & Repair:
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on electronic equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and electronic issues related to marine vessels.
  • Repair and replace faulty components, cables, and connectors on electronics systems.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant marine industry regulations, including safety standards.
3. Testing & Calibration:
  • Conduct functional tests on marine electronics to ensure proper operation.
  • Calibrate equipment for precise measurements and accuracy (e.g., GPS, radar).
  • Verify system integration for seamless operation across all components.
4. Customer Support & Training:
  • Provide technical support to boat owners and operators regarding the use and troubleshooting of electronic systems.
  • Offer training on the operation and maintenance of installed equipment.
  • Assist in upgrading or retrofitting outdated systems with newer technologies.
5. Documentation & Reporting:
  • Maintain detailed records of installations, repairs, and maintenance activities.
  • Provide regular reports on the condition of equipment and any issues that arise.
  • Ensure all technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and documentation are up-to-date and accessible.
6. Safety & Compliance:
  • Follow safety procedures during installations, repairs, and testing.
  • Ensure all work is completed in compliance with industry standards, regulations, and marine safety guidelines.
  • Maintain knowledge of changing regulations and best practices in marine electronics.
Qualifications: • Education & Certifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Certification in Marine Electronics or related field (e.g., NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) certification, and or ABYC (American Boat & Yacht Council) certification) required.
  • Technical diploma or associate degree in electronics, marine engineering, or related field is a plus.
• Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with marine electronics installation, repair, and maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of marine electrical systems and electronic devices.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and diagnosing faults in a wide range of systems and equipment.
• Skills & Competencies:
  • In-depth knowledge of marine electronic systems, including radar, GPS, sonar, navigation equipment, and communication systems.
  • Strong electrical and electronic troubleshooting skills.
  • Familiarity with wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to work with various hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and software.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Willingness to work in a variety of environments, including at sea or in dockside locations.
• Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 65 lbs.
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces and outdoor environments, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with tools and electronics for extended periods.
Working Conditions:
  • Full-time position with possible overtime, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on project deadlines and repair needs.
  • Work is often performed on-site at marinas, docks, or aboard vessels, which will require travel.
  • Exposure to various marine environments, including working in wet, salty, or hot conditions.
