The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Sr. Research Associate 1 to work at the UHealth medical campus in Miami, Fl.

CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Sr. Research Associate 1 provides laboratory-based support for the University’s research activities by tackling the more specialized and complex projects and experiments. Additionally, the incumbent leverages expertise in training and mentoring department staff, students, and less experienced research associates.

1. Collects, analyzes, and presents research data.
2. Monitors and maintains relevant research databases to ensure accurate data entries.
3. Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures.
4. Participates in the publication of significant results to include authorship of scientific monographs.
5. Advances expertise through continued education, training, and research.
6. Maintains current knowledge of relevant developments in the field.
7. Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice.
8. Warrants that department activities comply with applicable guidelines and regulations.
9. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and maintenance of the MorPhiC Data Portal, supporting the integration and visualization of biomedical datasets.
  • Develop and optimize backend data workflows, including ETL pipelines, data quality checks, and database design for scalable storage and access.
  • Collaborate with software engineers and research scientists to build interactive, user-friendly web interfaces and dashboards for data exploration.
  • Support the harmonization and integration of diverse biological and clinical data sources, leveraging APIs and standardized data schemas.
  • Assist in documentation, version control, and deployment of software components using Agile workflows and modern development tools.
  • Participate in testing, debugging, and performance optimization of software applications.
  • Communicate technical outcomes clearly and contribute to manuscript figures and supplementary material describing software tools and data systems.

Department Specific Qualifications                                                                                

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related field (as held by candidate). Master’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related field (as held by candidate).

Experience:

  • Experience developing and maintaining data pipelines and ETL workflows using tools such as Python, SQL, Talend, and Alteryx.

  • Ability to develop data dashboards and interactive visualizations using Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools.

  • Experience with backend systems and database technologies, including Azure SQL and MySQL, as well as exposure to cloud environments.

  • Familiarity with front-end technologies and visualization frameworks used in data portals.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to apply machine learning and statistical approaches to real-world data.

  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and data analysis libraries (e.g., pandas, scikit-learn, matplotlib).

  • Experience in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and communicating data-driven insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Understanding of data modeling, normalization, and database integration across heterogeneous data sources.

  • Interest in biomedical data integration and translational research applications.
