About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

Rivian is on a mission to redefine sustainable transportation and energy. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Software Engineer to spearhead the development and execution of cutting-edge software solutions for our manufacturing test systems, with an emphasis on integration with automation equipment. This role will be instrumental in architecting and implementing robust test stations for all manufacturing test stations, spanning from initial R&D phases through to seamless integration within our high-volume production environment. You will leverage your deep software engineering expertise and automation knowledge to ensure the efficiency, reliability, and quality of our manufacturing processes. This highly collaborative role demands exceptional communication skills and the ability to effectively bridge the gap between software development, electrical systems, automation equipment, and manufacturing requirements. Reporting to the Managing Engineer of Manufacturing Test Software, you will provide technical leadership and drive critical projects within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the full lifecycle of software development for manufacturing test equipment and automation, encompassing architecture design, implementation, and deployment
  • Design and implement software solutions for manufacturing testing, integrating seamlessly with Rivian's controls platform
  • Collaborate to develop PLC programs for Beckhoff and Allen Bradley control systems, ensuring robust and reliable operation of test equipment
  • Develop comprehensive software and equipment specifications, evaluate vendor capabilities, and provide data-driven sourcing recommendations
  • Drive research and development initiatives for innovative software and control technologies to enhance manufacturing test capabilities
  • Conduct feasibility studies to validate manufacturing test strategies and software solutions
  • Partner effectively with cross-functional teams, setting clear expectations and ensuring stakeholder satisfaction with delivered engineering solutions
  • Improve software development standards and best practices for the Manufacturing Test Engineering team
  • Provide expert technical guidance and support to the Operations team, including training, detailed documentation, and efficient troubleshooting
  • Identify, analyze, and drive corrective actions for software-related issues impacting test process quality and performance
  • Bonus: Contribute to electrical design aspects of test stations, leveraging experience with E-plan or similar tools
  • Bonus: Apply data analysis techniques to evaluate test results, identify trends, and drive continuous improvement

Qualifications

  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in developing and troubleshooting software for automated manufacturing systems, including data acquisition and control
  • Deep expertise in software development
  • Significant experience programming Beckhoff and Allen Bradley PLCs
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience as a Software Engineer in an automated manufacturing environment
  • Proven ability to work effectively under pressure, managing competing priorities and tight deadlines across multiple projects
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and a strong aptitude for quickly learning complex systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively interact with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent record-keeping and organizational abilities.
  • Experience transitioning automated test systems from prototype to production environments
  • Bonus: Experience with electrical design principles and tools such as E-plan
  • Bonus: Proficiency in data analysis techniques and tools
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally as required
