Nature of Work: The Traffic Engineer is a senior-level transportation engineering position within the Traffic Engineering and Operational Analysis Teams of the Traffic Development and Support Division (TDSD). The primary purpose of this position is to perform advanced professional work in the field of traffic engineering, supporting the safe and efficient operation of SHA roadways and facilities. The Traffic Engineer is responsible for conducting and reviewing complex traffic engineering analyses, including highway capacity studies, traffic signal evaluations, and Traffic Impact Study (TIS) reviews for significant transportation and development projects. This position applies engineering theories, principles, and standards to roadway improvement projects at the planning and design stages, assessing proposed design concepts, geometric elements, and operational measures of effectiveness.
Additionally, the Traffic Engineer reviews Design Requests (DRs) for new or modified traffic signals and other traffic control devices, as well as final design plans for approved DRs and geometric designs for large-scale and complex design-build projects. This position ensures all engineering designs and recommendations comply with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and applicable federal and state policies, standards, and guidelines. Expertise in traffic simulation software (e.g., Synchro/SimTraffic and Vissim) is required for analyzing and reviewing large and intricate transportation networks. The Traffic Engineer also performs administrative functions, including reporting to OOTS senior management and representing TDSD in meetings with internal SHA offices, developers, and external federal, state, and local agencies.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Four (4) years of experience in professional engineering.
Selective Qualification: Two (2) years of the required experience must have involved traffic engineering.
