Starting Salary Range:

$48,555.00 - $57,797.00/Annual

$23.34 - $27.79/Hour

Under general supervision of the Crew Supervisor, plan and direct skilled and technical irrigation maintenance work in the City’s parks, buildings, medians, rights-of-way, athletic fields, properties, and supervise subordinate irrigation and landscape technicians.

Examples Of Work To Be Performed

  • Perform repairs to City irrigation systems by identifying irrigation problems and replacing or repairing parts where appropriate.
  • Plan and direct maintenance and repair work on a regularly scheduled basis without direct supervision.
  • Assists crews in the planning and execution of their assignments providing technical assistance as required.
  • Train new workers in acquisition of skills and knowledge necessary for adequate performance of duties.
  • Perform manual labor and equipment operations related to the installation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of irrigation systems.
  • Perform basic manual labor tasks as assigned, including but not limited to loading, unloading, carrying or moving objects, digging or filling in holes and trenches, pruning or removing trees, assisting with maintenance work or construction.
  • Perform a variety of tasks related to landscape management, including but not limited to operating mowers, edgers, trimmers, hedge clippers, small tractors, backhoes, and vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair various plumbing and electrical problems related to irrigation systems; assists in inspecting and over sight of contractors to maintain their adherence to contracts and policies when working on irrigation systems.
  • Assists in maintaining and setting irrigation clocks and controllers with other maintenance staff to provide appropriate amounts of water for turf and landscaped areas.
  • Maintain irrigation plans/as-builts and order and maintain inventory of irrigation supplies.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment as assigned; inspect equipment before and after use.
  • Communicate with other departments, vendors, contractors, utility companies, and citizens to ensure coordinated activities.
  • Participate in the park operations ‘On Call’ rotation; answer on-call phone (24/7) and respond to call outs and emergencies during this period.

Required Knowledge Skills And Abilities

  • Interpret and apply pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Operational and design characteristics of irrigation systems to include electrical, hydraulic, and computerized irrigation systems.
  • Analyze irrigation data and information, draw conclusions, and propose responsive actions.
  • Principles and procedures of landscape maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment for irrigation systems and their proper use and maintenance.
  • Read and understand reference books and complicated procedure manuals such as writing schematics, controllers, and irrigation heads.
  • Read and interpret irrigation and landscape plans.
  • Perform basic arithmetic to calculate linear feet of pipe, pipe diameter, water velocity, and friction loss.
  • Ability to analyze problems and plan solutions.
  • Ability to work in extreme cold, heat, temperature swings, outdoors, indoors, exposure to the sun, and mechanical hazards.
  • Ability to read, converse in the English language, and hear clearly.
  • Ability to remain flexible for working on different tasks daily.
  • Ability to deal effectively with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, and the general public.
  • Work safely in close proximity to high-speed vehicle traffic along medians, rights-of-way, and other city properties.
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of employment an irrigation license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of experience in municipal irrigation system installation and repair.
  • Possession of an irrigation license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
  • Previous supervisory experience.

  • Fingering. Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

  • The worker is subject to environmental conditions. Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
